The Growing Burden of Email Backscatter And What You Can Do About It

You’ve just received a non-delivery report for an email you never sent.  One of your employees opened a bounce from an email they don’t recognize.  Or, your email servers are suddenly flooded and system speed has slowed to a snail’s pace. What the heck is going on?

It could be a case of email backscatter.

Whether you’re the email administrator for a Fortune 500 corporation or manage a network of 10 users, backscatter has become a widespread problem, and it affects organizations of all sizes.

Backscatter is the term for the bounces, replies, or other unwanted or unexpected email you may receive from third parties, even if you didn’t send them any email in the first place. It is the result of a spammer using your email address(es) to send spam to others. The spammer, of course, is forging your address, also known as spoofing. (Think of it as hijacking your address without you being aware of it.)
