Protecting Against a New Leading Threat: Fake AV Malware

Although fake or phony AntiVirus (Fake AV) schemes are not new on the cyberscene, in the past year they have become one of the leading forms of malware--able to evade virtually all of the real AV products that IT engineers and end-users traditionally rely on to protect against malware in all its forms.

Ironically, Fake AV tricks users into thinking they have picked up a virus (as in fact they have). This deception is accomplished through a pop-up, which looks like a legitimate AV scanner conducting a scan and displaying proof that a virus has been loaded into the user’s computer.

This whitepaper reviews several shorter-term preventive actions that can be taken to avoid or remove Fake AV malware, as well as some longer-range solutions that are more effective and seamless.
