As cybercrime rises, Florida businesses are fighting back

With theft, phishing schemes and viruses of every sort to contend with, businesses of all sizes are becoming increasingly aware of the threats they face in cyberspace.

 


Here in Florida, the dangers are great. According to a recent study, the Sunshine State ranks second behind California in both complaints and perpetrators of Internet crime.

Victor Nappe, CEO of SECNAP Network Security, a managed network security services provider based in Boca Raton, said data theft is “a global pandemic.” While thefts from financial and credit card companies are routinely in the news, he added, targets are practically everywhere, including legal and health care companies, oil companies and hospitals.

Nappe, former director of e-commerce for Apple’s enterprise software and professional services division, said the list of cyber attacks companies can fall prey to include everything from financial crime, corporate espionage and the theft of confidential legal documents such as patent filings.
