SECNAP CTO Discusses Cloud Security at 2009 Hacker Halted ConferenceBOCA RATON, Fla., September 15, 2009 – Michael Scheidell, chief technology officer for SECNAP® Network Security Corporation, will discuss security considerations related to cloud-based services at the 2009 Hacker Halted USA Conference next week in Miami. The conference will be held at the Hilton Miami Downtown, September 20-25, and Scheidell is scheduled to speak at 9:45 a.m. on September 24. Sponsored by EC-Council, the conference provides participants with in-depth knowledge of vulnerabilities as well as countermeasures they can take to avoid or remediate security infringements. It addresses current topics of interest to information security professionals, including emerging threats and global trends. In his presentation, "Exploring the Dark Side: What You Should Know about Security in The Cloud," Scheidell will review the benefits of using cloud-based services as well as the range of potential risks, including effects on compliance with HIPAA, GLBA and other regulations. "Cloud-based services are appealing for their convenience, flexibility and lease-by-the-piece economy, but without understanding the downside, information security professionals can put their networks at risk," said Scheidell. "For example, recent research by computer scientists at MIT and UC San Diego found that an attacker could place a malicious virtual machine (VM) close to a target server in a shared cloud environment, making it possible to launch a 'cross-VM attack.'" Pointing out that such attacks are preventable, Scheidell added, "We'll explore how organizations are safely using cloud-based services today, and highlight best practices that can help minimize risk." Scheidell founded SECNAP as a network security firm, and subsequently developed the company's security audit practice. As chief architect of the SpammerTrap® Email Security solution, including cloud and managed services, he brings to Hacker Halted both exceptional security expertise and extensive practical experience. Hacker Halted 2009 enables attendees to earn continuing education credits through the Hacker Halted Academy. For more information visit www.hackerhalted.com. About SECNAP
