SECNAP Network Security Featured in (IN)SECURE Magazine

Article by Michael Scheidell Explores Security Impact of Undocumented Layers of OSI Model

Boca Raton, Fla., Dec. 2, 2008 – SECNAP® Network Security Corporation, a leading provider of network and email security solutions, today announced that a ground-breaking article by chief technology officer, Michael Scheidell, has been featured in the December issue of (IN)SECURE Magazine. (IN)SECURE is a free digital news publication that explores the latest information security topics.

The SECNAP article identifies three undocumented layers of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model and the serious impact they can have on organizations' security programs. These undocumented OSI layers are politics, the religion of technology, and economics—elements which often drive sub-optimal decisions regarding security strategy and technology and can leave a network vulnerable to malicious intrusion or attack, according to Scheidell. The OSI article reviews an array of threats that may be posed by these powerful influencers.

Scheidell urges CISOs, CIOs and Information Technology managers to consider these hidden influencers when designing projects aimed at enhancing network security and the protection of sensitive data. In many cases, he suggests, they will need to change how they approach such projects.

"Change is difficult, however. Change consumes time. Change requires investment," observes Scheidell. "On the positive side, change can produce exciting new tools and applications. Change can jump-start new thinking. And if necessity is the mother of invention, change is the father."

In addition to real-world examples of the impact of these powerful influencers, the article offers insights to help information security personnel win approval for their projects. The complete article is available at http://www.secnap.com/press-room/news/insecure-magazine.pdf.

Interviews with Scheidell regarding network, email and information security have recently appeared in Hakin9 magazine and VARBusiness.
